  • What makes Santoriginal Tours unique?

There are numerous excursions available on the island, and with so many choices, travelers often feel confused or indecisive about what to choose and sometimes even question what they truly want to do. This can lead to a bit of uncertainty about whether a particular option is good or bad.

  • Why choose a private tour in Santorini?

Navigating Santorini using public transportation can be quite challenging and inconvenient. If your time on the island is limited, opting for a private tour is the most effective way to steer clear of the crowds, especially during the bustling high season.

  • Should I make a reservation well in advance?

If you're planning to enjoy a private tour, it's best to book it several months ahead of your trip to Santorini. On certain days when cruise ships are in port, availability can be quite limited. To ensure you don't miss out on this wonderful experience, it's highly recommended to make your reservation as early as possible.

  • Can I order a taxi to get me around?

You might want to consider avoiding the wait to get a taxi for getting around the island. While there's an app you can use or even Uber, relying on these options could be a bit challenging. First, during rush hours, you might find yourself waiting for quite some time. Secondly, hopping from place to place might end up being more costly than booking a private tour for a few hours with your own personal car and driver!

Disembarking in Santorini

  • How do I get ashore?

Because of the port's layout, all cruise ships need to tender passengers ashore. If you book a group tour through your cruise line, you'll be tendered at Athinios (New Port). If you choose to disembark independently, you'll be tendered at the Old Port of Fira (Gialos).

  • If I book a private tour where will you meet me?

As a third-party operator, we usually pick you up at the exit of the upper cable car station. However, if you get off at the New Port, we can arrange to pick you up from there as well.

It's important that we coordinate in advance to decide which port to meet you at before your day trip.

  • How to bypass the cable car?

While it’s generally not possible to skip the line, there are still some alternatives you might find helpful here.  If you already have a booking with us, please feel free to reach out for some insiders tips.

Quick answers people ask (FAQ)

Do cruise ships dock in Santorini?
No. Ships
anchor offshore and tender you to the Old Port under Fira.

Where do I go after the tender?
Take the
cable car up to Fira (fastest). Your tour should meet near the cable car exit.

Old Port vs. Athinios—what’s the difference?
Old Port is for cruise tenders; Athinios is the ferry port (road access). They’re different places.

How long is the cable car ride?
A few minutes each way;
waiting time varies with crowds. Build in a buffer on busy days.

Can I walk the steps instead of the cable car?
Yes, if you’re fit—expect steep, uneven steps. It’s slower on hot or crowded days.

How do I get to Oia from the cruise tender?
Up to
Fira by cable car, then tour/driver, bus, or taxi to Oia. Tours are most time-efficient on peak days.

What’s the best way to avoid crowds?
Disembark early, start with Oia first, choose small-group/private tours, and pad your return time.

How much time do I need for Oia + Fira?
Comfortably
4–5 hours including transfers; add time for a winery or village.

Is there time for a winery on a short call?
Often on
6–7 hour calls; choose a tour that fits your exact in-port window.

Are Sundays or holidays different?
Some shops/churches have different hours; attractions generally open, but crowds depend on ship count.

Can I meet a tour at Athinios?
Not from a cruise tender. Book tours that
start in Fira unless they clearly include tender-side arrangements.

What should I bring?
Water, hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, photo ID, and your
ship’s all-aboard time.

Is it safe to book independently?
Yes—choose
cruise-timed tours with a back-to-ship buffer and meet in Fira.

What if the schedule changes?
It happens. Always check your
cruise line’s app or daily program on the morning of arrival.
