How do you get ashore in Santorini, and how much time will you really have once you do? Will the regular cable car work for your day, or would Priority Access or a prearranged water taxi help? Built on our 12+ years of real, local cruise experience, this guide helps you understand tenders, cable car, crowds and the return to your ship, and choose a practical route around the island. PORTS & TENDERING

Cruise ships visiting Santorini stay offshore in designated positions in the caldera & use tenders to ferry passengers ashore.

Santorini is a tender port with two serving cruise ports — Old Port (Skala) for the cable car to Fira, and Athinios (New Port) for road transfers and ship shuttles.

Old Port vs New Port

Your arrival port depends on your cruise line’s arrangements for your sailing. Booking a ship excursion does not automatically mean you will avoid the cable car.

Old Port of Fira: The usual tender arrival point for independent passengers. Some cruise-line excursions also arrive here.

⚠️ No car can access this cruise port.

Athinios Port: Used for certain cruise-line excursions, shuttle arrangements and private water-taxi transfers.
→ Road access for buses, taxis and pre-arranged private vehicles.

Quick Tip

Note that Athinios is not a sightseeing port. It is the ferry port of Santorini, and there is nothing meaningful to do there without a pre-arranged pickup. If you choose this option, you need to have your own transfer, driver, or private tour arranged in advance.

Tendering

Independent passengers should check onboard how tender tickets or groups are assigned. Most arrive at Old Port; some sailings offer an alternative arrangement through Athinios.

Cruise ship → tender boat → confirmed arrival port

Your cruise line manages tendering, including meeting instructions for its own shore excursions. A private water taxi starts after you reach shore; it does not collect you from your ship.

Cruise-line priority tendering and Cable Car Priority Access are separate services.

All-board vs departure time

Your ship’s departure time is not your return deadline. Last tenders usually leaves about 90 minutes earlier. Cruise shore excursions target a return 2–3 hours before sail-away. For DIY, be near the Fira cable car 60–90 minutes before the printed last-tender

Busy queues or windy conditions may require a larger buffer, even with Priority Access.

Lines, Timing, Tips

Lines depend on overlapping ship arrivals and returns. The teleferic runs every 10 minutes and the ride alone is less than 5 minutes; waiting time is separate.

1. Check your cruise day: avoid peak hours especially when multiple cruise ships are in port.
2. Regular tickets: Standard tickets, including ordinary online e-tickets, use the normal passenger queue.

A private water taxi connects Old Port with a road-access port, normally Athinios.

West-facing viewpoints in Fira keep you close to the cable car. Arrive 60 minutes before sunset for golden hour; leave your final spot 60–90 minutes before all-aboard to ride the cable car without stress.

What Else To Consider

Small checks that make a big difference on a cruise-day visit.

Daylight Saving & ship time: Greece uses DST from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; confirm ship time vs local time and plan buffers in local time.
Heat & UV: July–August are hot; plan a midday pause in shade; hydrate; sunscreen.
Meltemi winds: Most common July–August; seas can be choppy. Tenders rarely cancel but may slow; catamarans can feel bumpy.
Sea temperature: Best for swimming mid-May to October; April is cool. Choose “view” days earlier in spring; “water” days later.

Set your plan in local time, keep a 60–90 minute buffer for the return, start early on hot or windy days, and match activities to the season.

How can I check Santorini’s cruise schedule, and what do the arrival times mean?

Find your date in our 2026 cruise schedule or 2027 cruise schedule to see scheduled ships and port times. Santorini is a tender port, so the listed arrival is not the time you will step ashore; allow for tender preparations, your assigned group and the boat journey. Schedules can change, so follow your ship’s onboard updates.

Will my tender arrive at Fira Old Port or Athinios?

Most independent cruise passengers arrive at Fira Old Port, below the cable car. Some ship excursions and shuttle arrangements use Athinios, which has road access, but booking a cruise-line excursion does not guarantee that arrival port. Is cruise-line priority tendering the same as Cable Car Priority Access?

No. Priority tendering concerns your journey from the ship to shore, while Cable Car Priority Access uses a separate ticket for the dedicated Fast Lane between Old Port and Fira. Can I avoid the cable car both when arriving and returning?

Yes, a pre-arranged round-trip private water taxi can connect Fira Old Port with a road-access port, normally Athinios, in both directions. A one-way boat transfer only bypasses the cable car for that leg, so check where your day finishes and how you return to your ship’s tender. Explore the water-taxi options →

Which return time matters: departure, all-aboard or last tender?

Plan to reach the correct tender boarding point before your ship’s announced last-tender deadline, following its all-aboard instructions. The departure time is later and should not be used as your return target. Allow enough time for your cable-car or boat route, including possible waits, and check whether ship time matches Santorini local time.
