Santorini Port Guide for Celebrity Cruises: What to Expect & Best Private Tour Options

Aphrodite Maria Micheli

Celebrity continues to feature Santorini on Greek-isles and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, including recent itineraries for Celebrity Xcel, Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Ascent, and Celebrity Equinox

It is a well-loved stop, but it is also one that catches first-time visitors off guard if they assume it will work like a normal Mediterranean dock. It is one of the most beautiful stops in the Mediterranean, but it needs a little local planning.

If your Celebrity cruise is bringing you to Santorini, let me help you understand the one thing many guests realize too late: Santorini is not a simple “walk off the ship and explore” port.

This guide is written especially for Celebrity Cruises guests who want to understand what to expect in Santorini, how to plan one smooth day ashore, and which private shore excursion options make the most sense if you want the day to feel relaxed, comfortable, and well-paced.

QUICK NOTE

Celebrity Cruises guests visiting Santorini should plan around tendering, the cable car, Oia crowds, and real usable time ashore. If you want the day to feel relaxed, private, and well-paced, a private shore excursion or a private sea-and-island combo is usually the smoothest fit.

What Celebrity Cruise guests should expect in Santorini

You do not need to feel nervous about Santorini. You just need to understand how the day really works, so you can enjoy the island instead of spending your time in lines, guessing where to go, or worrying about getting back to the ship.

Santorini is a tender port

This means your Celebrity ship stays offshore, and passengers are ferried ashore by tender. That first step matters more than people think.

You may need to follow specific instructions in the Celebrity app, your Daily Planner, or the information shared on board, including signing up for a tender group or priority list. Independent guests may also need to collect tender tickets or join an assigned tender group on the same morning.

This is the Celebrity Cruises app tender booking interface. It may not be fully active for Santorini yet, but it looks like online tender reservations could become available soon.

My advice is simple: do not leave this for the night before or for the same morning. Make sure you know how the procedure works before your trip or as soon as you board.

Celebrity Cruises tender tip

Check how tendering process work before your Cruise Day in Santorini

Celebrity Cruise DIY need to reserve a tender time, join a tender group, or collect tender details before going ashore.

1

Check the Celebrity app

Open the Celebrity app and look for Santorini tender information, tender reservations, or any instructions for independent guests going ashore.

2

Ask during the boarding process

When you board the ship, ask where and when tender information for Santorini will be available. This helps you avoid searching for answers at the last minute.

3

Check again the day before

The evening before Santorini, check the daily planner, Celebrity Today, or Guest Services for the final tender instructions. This is often when the clearest details are shared.

4

Go early the same morning

If tender tickets or tender groups are assigned on board, try to be at the tender ticket desk or announced meeting point between 07:00 and 08:30. Earlier groups usually give you more usable time ashore.

Aphrodite’s local advice: The best tender time depends on your ship schedule and how many other cruise ships are in port that day. Earlier tender groups are usually better on busy mornings, but if your Celebrity ship stays all day and there are no other midday arrivals, a later start can also work well.

Guests booked on ship-organized excursions are tendered to a different serving port where buses can meet them directly, Athinios Port, also called the New Port; while independent guests come ashore at the Old Port below Fira. For a clear breakdown of how disembarkation works locally — including Old Port vs Athinios and meeting points — see our Santorini Port Guide.

The tender shuttle itself is usually 10-15 minutes. When you reach Old Port, there is no normal road access for vans or buses to pick you up directly. The easiest and most common way to reach Fira is the cable car.

How Celebrity guests usually come ashore

From your Celebrity ship to Fira

This is the common route:

1
Celebrity ship
Anchored in the caldera
2
Tender boat
Short ride to shore
3
Old Port
Below Fira
4
Cable car
Up the caldera
5
Fira
The heart of the island

The Cable Car Reality

Santorini cable car above the caldera, connecting the Old Port with Fira for cruise passengers coming ashore by tender.

From the tender area at the Old Port, you will need to take the cable car, a small gondola-style lift that brings cruise passengers up to Fira Town. It works on a first come, first served basis, so during peak cruise times, lines can build quickly.

You can book cable car tickets online through their official e-ticket page, but this does not give you priority access. You still wait in the same line with everyone else.

There is no true “skip-the-line cable car” or special priority access that tour operators can magically provide. If you see that wording online, be careful; it is often not what it sounds like and can be misleading marketing. We explain this clearly in our post for the Skip-the-Line Tours.

Cable car ride is only less than 5 minutes and brings you to the heart of the island, Fira Town.

If you definitely do not want to use the cable car on the way up, Celebrity now offers several packages and transfer options for guests. These options are usually clearer and safer than many third-party “skip-the-line” promises online, and I explain them later in this post.

But before paying extra, it is important to understand how busy your Santorini cruise day really is. If your ship is the only cruise ship in port, or if the island is expected to be quiet, there may be no real reason to lose your limited time with extra transfers and complicated arrangements.

Not all days are the same, and not all sailings need the same plan.

If you prefer to have someone local advise you properly and show you the island according to your real cruise schedule, you can fill in the form below. We can check that for you and send you a personalized offer for your day and your sailing, based on your ship timing, your comfort level, and the kind of Santorini day you want.

Custom Tour

One Day in Santorini from a Celebrity Cruise

Most Celebrity Cruises sailings that stop in Santorini give guests a proper full day on the island, often from around 07:00 in the morning until 22:00 at night. This is good news, because Celebrity passengers can usually enjoy a fuller Santorini itinerary than guests on ships with short port calls.

But here is the part I always explain before someone starts planning around the printed schedule; that times do not mean you have the whole time for sightseeing.

Why your usable time is shorter than your printed port time

The first tenders usually begin leaving the ship around 07:30, with priority disembarkation independent guests going first. Then simultaneously cruise ship excursion tenders are attached to ships gangway and rest of the groups start to get off; cruise ship exucrison guests and independent guests according to their assigned group number.

Then you still need the tender ride and the cable car from the Old Port up to Fira.

At the end of the day, the same process happens in reverse. Most Celebrity last tenders are usually around 20:45 to 21:15, so you never plan an activity that ends that late.

This is also why you should be careful with sunset plans. Even when your Celebrity ship have a late sailing, that does not automatically mean you can relax in Oia for sunset during summer. Sunset is late and you still need to be back in Fira before the final return window.

A good rule for Celebrity guests is to keep about two hours after arrival and about two hours before departure as logistics buffer.

Things to do in Santorini on a Celebrity cruise day

Generally, for Santorini, these are the places and experiences most worth considering on a Celebrity cruise day:

1. Oia - The postcard dream

Oia is the Santorini image most first-time visitors have in mind. It is famous for the blue-domed churches, marble pathways, clifftop terraces, caldera views, boutique shops, and photo corners at every turn.

2. Fira - The lively caldera capital

Fira is the natural center of Santorini and the easiest town to reach from different parts of the island. For independent cruise passengers, it is also important because the Old Port tender area sits below Fira, and the cable car brings you up into the town.

3. Firostefani and Imerovigli

Firostefani and Imerovigli are wonderful if you want beautiful caldera views without spending all your time inside the busiest parts of Oia. This area gives you some of the most elegant viewpoints on the island, including the famous Three Bells of Fira.

4. Pyrgos and Megalochori

Pyrgos and Megalochori show a calmer, more traditional side of Santorini. You will find medieval touches, castle remnants, narrow village lanes, vineyard views, and a more local atmosphere.

5. Akrotiri

Akrotiri sits on the southwest side of Santorini, completely opposite Oia, and is home to one of the oldest and best-preserved prehistoric settlements in Europe. This advanced Bronze Age city, often called the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” gives you a fascinating look into life before the volcanic eruption shaped modern Santorini.

6. A Santorini winery

Santorini has around 14 wineries, and the island’s volcanic wines, especially Assyrtiko, are unique in the world. A winery can be a beautiful pause between sightseeing stops, with tasting areas, gentle breezes, and caldera or countryside views.

7. Lunch at the black-sand beach

Perissa and Kamari are the most accessible black-sand beach areas, with long stretches of dark volcanic sand, clear deep water, tavernas, cafés, and a more relaxed seaside feeling.

8. Catamaran cruise in the caldera

A catamaran cruise is a completely different way to experience Santorini. When you have a long call, a private catamaran or a coordinated sea-and-island combo can be a wonderful way to combine both sides of Santorini in one day.

Best Santorini private tour options for Celebrity Cruises guests

If you are comparing Celebrity shore excursions with private local options, the best choice depends on your travel style, your budget, and the pace you want for the day. For many Celebrity guests, a private island tour is not a luxury. It is the Santorini game-changer.

Here are the private options we recommend for your Celebrity cruise day, starting with the ones that usually fit this sailing best.

1. Santorini Must-See Highlights (7hours)

This is one of the top-selling options for Celebrity guests visiting Santorini for the first time, and it is the tour that fits almost everyone.

It gives you the Santorini most guests dream about, but with a flexible route that can adjust to your day. You can visit Oia, caldera viewpoints, traditional villages, stop for lunch by the black beach, visit a winery or brewery, or include the archaeological site of Akrotiri.

The biggest advantage of this tour is flexibility.

If tendering is delayed, we adjust.
If Oia is too crowded at one hour, we change the route.
If someone in your group wants less walking, we choose easier stops.
If you want more photos, more local stories, or a calmer pace, we shape the day around that.

Learn more about why Must-See Highlights works so well for first-time visitors, or book the tour here: Santorini Must-See Highlights - Private Tour

2. Private Luxury Combo: Catamaran Cruise & Island Highlights

This is one of my top recommendations for Celebrity guests who want Santorini to feel complete, one coordinated private booking that combines a five-hour private catamaran cruise with a four-hour guided island tour.

For many Celebrity guests, this option matches the relaxed premium style of the cruise itself: sea views, privacy, comfort, scenic variety, and none of the “we spent the day moving with a bus herd” feeling.

Since Celebrity port days in Santorini have late sailing, this can be a wonderful way to enjoy almost everything in one day: the caldera from the sea and the island highlights by land. During the sea part, you see the volcanic landscape, the cliffs, the coastline, and the deep blue water from a calmer angle. You can swim near the volcanic beaches, stop by the thermal springs, relax on board with beautiful caldera views, enjoy lunch, and have time for snorkeling if you wish. Then, after the catamaran cruise, the island highlights part gives you the Santorini views, villages, photo stops, and local guiding that most first-time visitors still want.

It is also a very good option for big families, groups of friends, and multi-gen families, because it combines many experiences in one day while keeping everything private, comfortable, and flexible.

3. Santorini Your Way

Santorini Your Way is the best option if you do not want a ready-made itinerary, but prefer to build the day together with us around your available time, budget, and priorities. You tell us what matters most to you: Oia and the blue domes, quieter villages, wineries, food, beach areas, Akrotiri, photo stops, or simply a calmer private tour without rushing. Then we help shape a realistic route that fits your cruise schedule, your group’s pace, and the amount of time you actually want to spend touring the island.

This option works especially well for guests who want local advice before booking, or for those who already have a plan in mind and simply want an experienced local team to help turn it into a smooth, realistic itinerary. Whether you need guidance from scratch or assistance refining your own ideas, we can help organize the day in a way that makes the best use of your time and gives you the Santorini experience that feels right for your group.

You can learn more or book the tour: "Santorini Your Way" - Private Customizable Tour

4. Santorini catamaran cruises

A private catamaran cruise is best if the sea is your main priority. It is relaxed, scenic, and very Santorini. You can enjoy the caldera, swimming stops, food and drinks on board, and a slower rhythm away from the land crowds.

For cruise passengers, I highly recommend the morning private option. This gives you more control over the day, especially if tendering or the cable car takes longer than expected. Because the catamaran is privately chartered for you, the boat is waiting for your group, so you can enjoy a calm sea-focused day:

If you have priority disembarkation and a private option is not within your budget, you can also look at the semi-private option. But this needs careful planning. You usually need to be near the cable car area by around 09:00 for pickup, and if you miss the pickup, the tour is normally non-refundable:

This semi-private catamaran is mostly recommended for guests staying on the island; For regular cruise guests, it can be risky because the catamaran does not start directly from the tender point.

The sunset catamaran option, even though is popular, is not the right fit for cruise passengers. In summer, sunset is late, and you still need time for the transfer from the marina back to Fira, the cable car or return route, and the tender back to the ship.

Author's Note

But if this is your first time in Santorini and you also want Oia, cliffside views, village photos, and a real feel for the island, a catamaran cruise on its own may feel incomplete. It is a beautiful choice for sea-focused guests, repeat visitors, or anyone who wants the calmest possible day away from the land crowds. If you want to enjoy both the sea and the island highlights in one day, then the Combo Tour option is the better fit for you.

A smooth Celebrity cruise-day rhythm

Every sailing is a little different, but this is the kind of rhythm I usually like for Celebrity guests:

The evening before Santorini
Check Celebrity’s tender instructions in the app or daily planner. See if you need to collect a tender ticket or join a group. Charge your phone and make sure you will have WhatsApp with data available, because it makes meeting your guide much easier.

Early morning
Try to get one of the earlier tenders if you are touring independently. The earlier you get up to Fira, the more flexibility you have.

Meeting your private guide
For most independent guests, the meeting point is at the top of the cable car in Fira. Your guide should be in contact with you and ready to adjust if tendering is slower than expected.

Oia and island highlights
If Oia is important to you, timing is everything. Sometimes we go there early. Sometimes, depending on the cruise schedule and crowd pressure, it is better to adjust the order and visit other stops first. This is where having a local private guide makes a real difference.

Return buffer
Do not plan your return too tightly. On a busy day, I always prefer guests to be back toward Fira earlier than they think they need to be. The goal is not to rush the end of the tour; the goal is to avoid stress.

Things Celebrity Cruises guests should know while planning their Santorini Port Day

Celebrity Cruises guests visiting Santorini should plan around tendering, the public cable car, Oia crowd waves, and real usable time ashore — not just the hours printed on the itinerary.

If you want your day to feel relaxed, well-paced, and beautifully organized, a private tour— and on a fuller port day, a coordinated private sea-and-island combo — is usually the smoothest fit.

How to Know if Your Celebrity Cruise Day Will Be Busy

Crowds in Santorini are not random. They are influenced by:

  • Number of ships in port
  • Overlapping arrival times
  • Big Bus overlapping Sightseeing times
  • Wind conditions (which affect tender flow)
  • Cable car efficiency
  • Afternoon return waves

Before choosing any tour, it’s wise to check how busy your Santorini cruise day will be using the Santoriginal Crowd Planning Tool

It’s one of the simplest ways to reduce stress before you even arrive.

Santorini cable car connecting the Old Port with Fira above the caldera

What are your options if you want to avoid the cable car?

In the last couple of years, Celebrity Cruises and the Royal Caribbean Group have started offering more options for guests who want to explore Santorini independently, but do not want to use the traditional Old Port route with the cable car, steps, donkeys, or water taxis.

These options can be useful for guests who want something arranged through the cruise line, especially if they feel safer using a cruise-approved transfer instead of relying on third-party promises.

The exact options can change by ship and sailing, but these are the ones Celebrity guests may see:

1. Fira Transfer (onboard sales only)

This shuttle service includes a tender boat ride to Athinios Port and a bus transfer from Athinios to Fira town. It is not a guided tour, and no commentary is available onboard. The shuttle has a set departure time from the ship. Shuttle coordinators are usually available at Athinios and in Fira to help coordinate transfers.

This can be a useful option if you want to avoid the cable car on the way up and down, and reach Fira through the cruise-line transfer system.

2. Fira On Your Own (online sales)
This is usually a shuttle service with short commentary and free time in Fira, the capital of Santorini. On some sailings, it gives guests around 4 hours of free time to explore independently. It can help you avoid the cable car on both ways, because you are tendered to Athinios and transferred by bus to Fira.
One thing to keep in mind: if you want to stay longer on the island, you may still be able to take the cable car down later on your own, depending on your ship’s return instructions and timing.

3. Tender to Athinios (onboard sales only)
On some sailings, guests may also have the option to pay for a tender transfer to Athinios Port. The price is usually around 20-30 euros per person, but this can change depending on the cruise line and sailing.  This option does not include a return transfer. That means you will need to return to the tender area through Fira, most commonly by cable car or by walking the steps.
Note that Athinios is not a sightseeing port. It is the ferry port of Santorini, and there is nothing meaningful to do there without a pre-arranged pickup. If you choose this option, you need to have your own transfer, driver, or private tour arranged in advance. This is important because many third-party organized tours do not include Athinios pickup unless it is clearly confirmed before booking.

For a clearer look at when it is worth riding the cable car, when it may be better to avoid it, and what your real alternatives are, see our detailed Santorini Cable Car Guide.

Why private tours often suit Celebrity guests better

Celebrity positions itself as a premium cruise line built around comfort, thoughtful service, and a smoother travel experience. In Santorini, your shore day should follow that same logic. It should feel scenic, well-paced, and easy to enjoy, not crowded, rushed, or stressful in one of the most beautiful places in Greece.

I do not think every traveler needs a private tour everywhere. But in Santorini, especially on cruise days, a private tour often makes the whole day work better. And if you do not want to feel stuck with a large group tour in the narrow streets of Oia or Fira, you need someone local to help you plan the day properly.

If your tender is delayed, your private guide can stay in touch and adjust. If your family needs less walking, the route can change. If the island is crowded in one direction, your guide can reverse the order or choose better-timed stops.

The goal is not just to see Santorini. The goal is to enjoy it at the right pace, with the right timing, and with someone who knows how the island works on busy cruise days.

That is the part many guests remember most. Not only the photos, but the feeling that someone was watching the logistics for them.

This is also why I always tell guests to keep WhatsApp available on the day. It removes so much stress. You are not trying to guess where to go or who to call. You already have a local person helping you from inquiry to drop-off.

My honest recommendation for Celebrity guests

For most Celebrity guests visiting Santorini for the first time, I would start with a private island highlights tour.

It gives you the classic Santorini experience, keeps the day flexible, and works well around tendering, cable car timing, and cruise-day crowds.

If your port day is longer and you want something more special, then the Private Luxury Combo with catamaran and island highlights can be a beautiful choice.

If your dream is mainly sea, privacy, and calm, then a private catamaran cruise may be the right fit.

The best choice is not always the biggest tour. The best choice is the one that fits your real time ashore and lets you enjoy Santorini without stress.

Quick FAQ

Yes. Santorini is a tender port, so Celebrity cruise ships anchor in the caldera and passengers come ashore by tender boat. Independent guests usually arrive at the Old Port below Fira, then continue up to town by cable car, steps, or another pre-arranged option.

Independent guests usually do, because they typically arrive at the Old Port below Fira. From there, there is no normal road for buses or vans to pick guests up directly, so the cable car is the most common way up to Fira.

Cruise-line excursions or transfer packages may use Athinios Port or other bus-based arrangements, depending on the sailing. This should always be checked on board through Celebrity’s app, Daily Planner, or excursion desk.

The most popular choices are Oia, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Megalochori, Akrotiri, a Santorini winery, Red Beach or the volcanic coast, lunch by the black-sand beach, and a catamaran cruise in the caldera.

You do not need to do everything. The best Santorini day is usually the one that matches your time ashore, crowd level, tender situation, and the pace you want for your group.

For most first-time Celebrity guests, the Santorini Must-See Highlights Private Tour is usually the best fit. It can include Oia, caldera viewpoints, traditional villages, photo stops, a winery, a beach lunch, or Akrotiri, depending on your time and interests.

The biggest advantage is flexibility. If tendering is delayed, the route can adjust. If Oia is too crowded at one hour, the order can change. If your group wants less walking, more photos, or a calmer pace, the day can be shaped around that.

Yes, if your Celebrity ship has a long enough call and the timing is planned carefully. A coordinated private sea-and-island combo can combine a private catamaran cruise with a private island highlights tour in one day.

This is often the easiest way to enjoy both sides of Santorini without trying to connect two separate bookings on your own. The timing, transfers, land tour, sea tour, and return window are planned together from the beginning.
