What is a Santorini water taxi?
A Santorini private water taxi is a pre-arranged private boat transfer reserved for your party. For cruise passengers arriving at Fira Old Port, it creates a different route onto the island. An example could be:
Fira Old Port → Athinios Port → Santorini’s road network
Fira Old Port has no road access. Most passengers take the public cable car up to Fira, walk the long stairway, or continue by boat. Athinios is Santorini’s main ferry and commercial port, with road access for cars, minivans and minibuses.
How does a private water taxi work for cruise passengers?
You cannot board the private water taxi from the cruise ship. The ship-to-shore tender is controlled by your cruise line. So the usual route is this:
- Your cruise ship anchors offshore in the Santorini caldera.
- Your cruise line operates or assigns the tender that brings you ashore.
- The cruise-line tender drops you off at Fira Old Port.
- You meet your pre-arranged private water taxi at the tender area.
- You board the private boat.
- The boat transfers you to Athinios or the marina being used that day.
- Your pre-arranged road transportation meets you there.
A water taxi should normally be planned together with your onward transportation. Reaching Athinios or Ammoudi by boat does not by itself get you to Fira, Oia or the rest of the island.
So are the water taxis to avoid the cable car?
Yes, if you get a water taxi to another port you do not need to use the cable car to come up.
It does not provide priority cable car access, a skip-the-line ticket or a separate cable car queue, it just transfers you to another port or marina.
A one-way private water taxi bypasses the cable car on arrival. A round-trip arrangement bypasses it in both directions.

Is there a difference between a water taxi and a water shuttle in Santorini?
They are not quite the same thing.
A private water taxi is reserved for your party and can be coordinated around your tender arrival and onward transportation.
A water shuttle is shared with other cruise passengers and follows its own departure and arrival arrangements, commonly transferring passengers by boat toward Ammoudi. Also it is really difficult to book it online so you have to rely on finding a spot and buy the tickets on the spot on the day.
Moreover, Ammoudi is still at sea level. So unless your water shuttle ticket includes a the bus ride you need to still find a way to get to the top. Also if you have the bus transfer included in the ticket then you will need to walk half a mile to the parking lot.
So when comparing the water transfer options, do not look only at the boat. Look at the whole connection from the cruise tender to the island’s road network.

For most independent cruise passengers, Fira Old Port is the place they associate with the Santorini cruise port. It sits below Fira and is where passengers arriving there by cruise tender normally find the cable car, steps and boat services.

Athinios is Santorini’s main ferry and commercial passenger port and has direct road access. It is also used for certain organized cruise passenger movements and shore-tour operations. Why is Athinios usually more practical than Ammoudi?
For a private shore excursion, Athinios is usually the more practical arrival point because a vehicle can meet you directly at the port. You step off the private boat and continue straight into your vehicle.
At Ammoudi, the marina and vehicle parking area are separated, so passengers normally need to walk roughly half a mile before meeting their transportation.
That does not mean Ammoudi is never used. Weather, port traffic or instructions on the day may make Ammoudi or another marina the better alternative.
When is a private water taxi worth it?
A private water taxi is most useful when it solves a real timing or coordination problem.
It may be worth considering when:
- Several ships are expected in Santorini.
- Your group is concerned about cable car congestion.
- Your ship has an afternoon or early-evening departure.
- You want one company coordinating the boat, vehicle, guide and return plan.
- Your family or group wants to stay together after reaching Fira Old Port.

A round-trip water taxi is most useful when return timing is tight. If you have a late sailing, you may only need the water taxi on arrival and return through Fira later, after the busiest afternoon period.
1. One-way private water taxi and private tour
You meet Santoriginal at Fira Old Port and take the private water taxi to Athinios. Your vehicle and local guide meet you there, followed by approximately seven hours of private sightseeing.
The tour finishes in Fira near the upper cable car station. You return independently to Fira Old Port, and cable car tickets are not included.
This arrangement often suits ships sailing after approximately 9 PM, when the later departure gives you more flexibility for the return. You may also have time to walk around Fira, have a meal or enjoy the caldera views before heading back down.
This is guidance rather than a fixed rule. Sunset time, last tender, other ship departures and the day’s cable car traffic all matter.
2. Round-trip private water taxi and private tour
You meet at Fira Old Port, travel by private water taxi to Athinios, and enjoy approximately six hours of private sightseeing.
At the end of the tour, your vehicle returns you to Athinios. The private water taxi then takes your party back to Fira Old Port, where you join your cruise line’s tender for the final journey to the ship.
This bypasses the public cable car route in both directions. It is generally the stronger choice for ships leaving in the afternoon or early evening, often before approximately 7 PM, because the return is coordinated without sending you back through Fira.
The actual recommendation still depends on your ship schedule, tender plan and port conditions. An early departure does not always mean you need the round-trip option, but protecting the return journey becomes more important when the available time is limited.
Unlike fixed group cable-car-detour tours, this experience is reserved exclusively for your party. Your boat arrangement, private vehicle, local guide, sightseeing route and pace are planned around your group, actual tender arrival and ship timing.
What if my cruise tender is late?
Cruise tender times can change. Your assigned tender group may run later than expected, especially when several ships are moving passengers ashore at the same time. For that reason, any private water taxi arrangement should allow some flexibility around the actual tender arrival.

If weather, sea conditions or port traffic make Athinios unsuitable that day, the captain may use Ammoudi Bay or another suitable marina instead. Your vehicle and local guide will meet you at the adjusted arrival point, and we will adapt the plan accordingly.
The important part is that you will still bypass the public cable car route. A change of marina does not mean you need to return to Fira and use the cable car.
The exact arrival point is decided according to the conditions on the day, with the captain’s instructions and safe operation coming first.
A final local note
Before paying for a private water taxi, look at the whole cruise day: your tender arrangements, the number of ships in port, your last tender and the time you want to spend sightseeing.
Some days, the cable car is perfectly suitable. On other days, especially when the ship leaves earlier or several departures overlap, the water taxi can protect the part of the schedule that matters most.
The best plan is not always the one that avoids the cable car at any cost. It is the one that uses your real time ashore well, keeps the return realistic and lets your group enjoy Santorini without spending the day solving port logistics.
