Cruise passengers can use a private water taxi from the Santorini cruise port at Fira Old Port. After your cruise-line tender brings you ashore, a pre-arranged private boat can take you across the caldera to a port with road access, normally Athinios Port.

Fira Old Port sits at the bottom of the caldera cliffs and has
no road access. For most independent cruise passengers, the usual way onto the island is to take the
public cable car or walk the
587 steps up to Fira, approximately
220 metres (720 feet) above the port. Once you reach Fira, you are connected to the island’s road network and can continue by car, bus or tour vehicle, or simply explore the town on foot.
A private water taxi creates a different route. Instead of travelling up through Fira, you board a pre-arranged private boat at Fira Old Port and cross the caldera to Athinios Port, or when conditions require it, another marina with road access.
Cruise ship → cruise-line tender → Fira Old Port → private water taxi → Athinios Port → private vehicle + local guide → Santorini sightseeing
This is why a water taxi is described as a cable car alternative. It does not give you priority access to the cable car; it takes you by a completely different route.
Since September 2026, there is also a real
Priority Fast Lane operated by Santorini Cable Car. For some couples and smaller parties,
fast lane access ticket may be the simpler alternative to arranging a private boat. A private water taxi still makes more sense when you prefer to bypass the cable car completely or when the boat works better for your group size and itinerary.
When do you need a water taxi?
This can be useful on a really busy cruise day, but it is not necessary for everyone. Your ship schedule, tender arrangements, cruise traffic and return time should guide the decision.
A private water taxi is most useful when it solves a real timing or coordination problem.
It may be worth considering when:
- Several ships are expected in Santorini.
- Your group is concerned about cable car congestion.
- Your ship has an afternoon or early-evening departure.
- You dislike fixed group schedules or waiting for a shared boat to fill.
So for cruise passengers arriving at Fira Old Port, it creates a different route onto the island. An example could be:
Fira Old Port → Athinios Port → Santorini’s road network
So the water taxi is a service mainly to avoid using the cable car to come up. It does not provide priority cable car access, a skip-the-line ticket or a separate cable car queue, it just transfers you to another port or marina.
My advice is not to choose a water taxi simply because you have read everywhere that you should “avoid the Santorini cable car.” This option is heavily promoted at the moment, so it can easily start to sound as if everyone needs it.
They don't.
The goal is not to avoid the cable car at any cost. It is to choose the option that makes your cruise day work best.

How is a private water taxi arranged?
You cannot board the private water taxi from the cruise ship. The ship-to-shore tender is controlled by your cruise line. So the usual route is this:
- Your cruise ship anchors offshore in the Santorini caldera.
- Your cruise line operates or assigns the tender that brings you ashore.
- The cruise-line tender drops you off at Fira Old Port.
- You meet your pre-arranged private water taxi at the tender area.
- The boat transfers you to Athinios or the marina being used that day.
- Your pre-arranged road transportation meets you there.
Is there a difference between a water taxi and a water shuttle?
Yes, and this is worth understanding before you book because the terms are sometimes used as if they mean the same thing.
A water shuttle from Fira Old Port is a shared boat service used by cruise passengers who want to continue by sea toward Ammoudi and the side of Oia. You travel with other passengers, the boat runs on its own departure schedule, and you may need to wait before leaving.
A private water taxi, on the other hand, is usually a smaller boat reserved for your party and can be coordinated around your tender arrival. It normally makes sense to arrange it together with onward transportation because Athinios and Ammoudi are still at sea level. You still need a vehicle or guide waiting for you there to continue to Fira, Oia or the rest of the island.
So when comparing “no cable car” tours in Santorini, do not look only at whether a boat is included. Many of these tours use a shared water shuttle from Fira Old Port, even when the sightseeing tour itself is private.
A private land tour does not automatically mean a private boat transfer. Check whether the boat is private, where it takes you, and how you connect with your guide or vehicle afterwards. Otherwise, you may skip the cable car only to end up waiting again with the same crowds you were trying to avoid.

Once you know that a private water taxi actually solves a problem for your cruise day, the next question is whether you need it only when arriving or in both directions.
So these are the two practical ways to organize the day:
1. One-way private water taxi and private tour
You meet Santoriginal Tours representative at Fira Old Port and take the private water taxi to Athinios. Your vehicle and local guide meet you there, followed by approximately seven hours of private sightseeing.
The tour finishes in Fira near the upper cable car station. You return independently to Fira Old Port, and cable car tickets are not included.
This arrangement often suits cruise ships sailing that depart after 9 PM, when the later departure gives you more flexibility for the return. You may also have time to walk around Fira, have a meal or enjoy the caldera views and sunset before heading back down.
This is guidance rather than a fixed rule. Sunset time, last tender, other ship departures and the day’s cable car traffic all matter.
2. Round-trip private water taxi and private tour
You meet at Fira Old Port, travel by private water taxi to Athinios, and enjoy approximately six hours of private sightseeing.
At the end of the tour, your vehicle returns you to Athinios. The private water taxi then takes your party back to Fira Old Port, where you join your cruise line’s tender for the final journey to the ship.
This bypasses the public cable car route in both directions. It is generally the stronger choice
for ships leaving in the afternoon or early evening, often before approximately 7 PM, because the return is coordinated without sending you back through Fira.
Is a private water taxi a good option for families and groups?
Yes. In fact, this arrangement can make particularly good sense for families and groups because the cost of the boat, vehicle and private tour is shared across your party, while the entire arrangement is still reserved only for you.
For groups of
1–15 guests, we normally arrange a private speedboat. For
16 guests or more, a larger private tender boat can be arranged instead. Your road vehicle is also matched to your group size, so everyone can continue together once you reach the island’s road network.
- 1–3 guests: private car
- 4–6 guests: private minivan
- 7–20 guests: Sprinter van or similar premium minibus
- 21+ guests: group split in Sprinter van or coach
This means that, especially for families and larger groups, the total cost can work out
quite close to what you would pay per person for a shared “no cable car” group tour. The difference is that you are not following a fixed group schedule; the boat, vehicle and local guide are arranged only for
your family or group, around your tender arrival, ship timing and pace.
What about limited mobility?
Boarding a private water taxi requires stepping between the dock and the boat, and conditions vary by vessel and sea conditions. If someone in your party has limited mobility or uses a wheelchair, contact us before booking so we can advise what is realistic for your day.
What if my cruise tender is late?
Cruise tender times can change. Your assigned tender group may run later than expected, especially when several ships are moving passengers ashore at the same time. For that reason, any private water taxi arrangement should allow some flexibility around the actual tender arrival.

If weather, sea conditions or port traffic make Athinios unsuitable that day, the captain may use Ammoudi Bay or another suitable marina instead. Your vehicle and local guide will meet you at the adjusted arrival point, and we will adapt the plan accordingly.
The important part is that you will still bypass the public cable car route. A change of marina does not mean you need to return to Fira and use the cable car.
The exact arrival point is decided according to the conditions on the day, with the captain’s instructions and safe operation coming first.

For a private shore excursion, Athinios is usually the more practical arrival point because your vehicle can meet you directly at the port. You step off the private boat and continue straight into your vehicle.

Why shouldn’t I just book a cruise-line shore excursion and avoid all these logistics?
If your main reason for booking a cruise-line shore excursion is to avoid the cable car or be certain that you will arrive at Athinios, do not assume that this is guaranteed.
Under the current 2026 port arrangements, cruise passengers are distributed between Fira Old Port and Athinios, so even passengers joining organized cruise-line excursions may still be tendered to Fira Old Port. The exact arrangements depend on your ship and the port plan for that day.
This means that booking a cruise-line shore excursion does not automatically guarantee that you will arrive at Athinios or avoid the cable car. If this is important to you, check the meeting and tender instructions for your specific excursion rather than assuming that every ship-sponsored tour uses Athinios.
A final local note
Before paying for a private water taxi, look at the whole cruise day: your tender arrangements, the number of ships in port, your last tender and the time you want to spend sightseeing.
Some days, the cable car is perfectly suitable. On other days, especially when the ship leaves earlier or several departures overlap, the water taxi can protect the part of the schedule that matters most.
The best plan is not always the one that avoids the cable car at any cost. It is the one that uses your real time ashore well, keeps the return realistic and lets your group enjoy Santorini without spending the day solving port logistics.
