We Checked the New Santorini Cable Car Fast Lane in Person: How Priority Access Works in 2026.
Santorini's cable car now has a real priority lane
If you have been researching a Santorini cruise stop, you have probably seen countless articles and comments about the cable-car queue. Sometimes there is hardly a wait. On other cruise days, that short three-minute ride between the Old Port and Fira can come with a very long queue beforehand.
Until recently, “skip the line” in Santorini often meant avoiding the cable car altogether by travelling from the Old Port by boat, which is why there is so much confusing information online. Our advice at Santoriginal Tours has always been clear: be careful with claims of “priority” tickets. Buying an ordinary cable-car ticket online does not give you priority boarding, and that is still true.
The
new Priority Access we tested is different. This is an
actual priority lane at the Santorini Cable Car itself, using a separate Priority Access ticket and dedicated Fast Lane.
So yes — there is now a real priority lane at the Santorini Cable Car. We went to the cable car in Fira, spoke directly with the staff and tested how the new system works. The priority ticket is currently a physical blue ticket and uses a separate fast-track lane checked by cable-car personnel and security.
This is not the regular cable-car e-ticket and it is not a water-taxi workaround. It is an actual dedicated fast-track lane at the Santorini Cable Car.
At present, priority tickets are currently handled as physical printed tickets through the travel-agency channel and are not available through the cable car's public online e-ticket store.

How the new Santorini Cable Car Priority Access works
The regular cable-car ticket uses the normal passenger queue. Standard tickets can also be purchased through the official cable-car e-ticketing platform, but an ordinary e-ticket does not turn into a Priority ticket simply because you bought it online. The official site currently continues to sell its standard tickets online.
The new Priority Access ticket is different. Priority passengers use a separate fast-track lane, where their tickets are checked by security and cable-car personnel before boarding.
At the moment, the tickets are also easy to distinguish:
Green ticket: regular cable-car access, non-priority ticket
Blue ticket: Fast Lane access, priority ticket.
When we checked with cable-car staff on 8 September 2026 all ages actually need the full Priority ticket. There is currently no reduced priority price. Also they did not give us a published maximum group size for the Priority service.

Can I buy a Priority ticket when I arrive at the cable car?
This is the part most cruise passengers need to know.
The 2026 Priority tickets are not currently being sold as an individual walk-up Priority option to passengers at the station.
They are currently being distributed through authorized travel agencies.
Santoriginal is an authorized Greek travel agency, so we obtain these Priority tickets directly in physical printed form for guests who have booked the service together with their tour.
This is also why the Priority service should not be confused with the ordinary online cable-car ticket. The official Santorini Cable Car website currently sells only standard e-tickets to the public.
Does Priority Access mean absolutely no waiting?
What you are purchasing is access to the dedicated Priority Lane rather than the ordinary cable-car queue.
Cable-car operations can still be affected by loading, safety procedures, technical issues, weather and general port operations.
The real value is that on a busy cruise day you are no longer relying exclusively on the standard passenger line.
For a cruise passenger with only a few hours on Santorini, that difference can be very important.
Why does Priority Access matter for cruise passengers?
Santorini is a tender port. Most independent cruise passengers arriving at Fira Old Port still need to make their way from sea level up to Fira before continuing around the island. The cable car is therefore one of the first logistical decisions of the day.
Santorini's official berthing policy sets a daily maximum of 8,000 cruise passengers, but they do not arrive evenly across the day. Arrivals, tenders, excursions and afternoon returns can still create very concentrated pressure around the Old Port and cable car.
That is why we see Priority Access less as a “luxury ticket” and more as a way of protecting something very valuable on a cruise stop: your time.
Should I choose Priority Cable Car or a water taxi?
There is no single answer for every guest.
For couples, families and private groups who want to arrive through Fira Old Port and continue directly into Fira, the new Priority Cable Car is now the simplest fast-track option we can arrange.
A private water taxi remains an excellent alternative when the itinerary works better by going directly from the Old Port towards Athinios, particularly for larger groups. Check our Water Taxi Guide to learn more about how it works in Santorini.

We do not believe in selling “skip the line” simply because the words sound attractive.

Can I add Priority Access without booking a tour?
Not through Santoriginal Tours.
We offer Priority Cable Car access only as an add-on to our private tours, rather than selling cable-car tickets as a standalone service.
Our main job is still to plan your Santorini day: meeting you at the right place, adjusting around the crowds, taking you beyond Fira, showing you Oia and the villages properly, and making sure your return timing works with your ship.
The Priority Lane simply helps us make that day even smoother.
Note that Priority tendering and Cable Car Priority Access are two different things. Priority tendering may help you leave your cruise ship earlier. The new Cable Car Priority Access applies only after you reach the Old Port and join the cable-car system. Having one does not automatically include the other.

Each blue Priority Access ticket is valid for one cable-car journey, in either direction. If you want Priority Access both from the Old Port up to Fira and later from Fira back down to the Old Port, you need two blue tickets per person.
Not every cruise day needs Priority Access. If your ship has a long stay, you arrive during a quieter window, or there are few other ships tendering at the same time, the regular cable car may still be perfectly practical. Priority becomes more valuable when your usable time ashore is short or your tender timing overlaps with a concentrated arrival or return wave.

What about the 2027 season?
The Santorini Cable Car technical team confirmed to us that the cable car will close from 1 December 2026 until 15 April 2027 for the planned mechanical upgrade. A public announcement is expected shortly.
The new Priority Access system is being tested during September and October 2026 and will continue for the 2027 season. Registered travel agencies, including Santoriginal Tours, will continue to have access to Priority tickets.
What is still to be confirmed is the 2027 price, the exact booking process, and whether travelers will also be able to purchase Priority Access directly online.
No. The normal online cable-car ticket is still a standard ticket. Buying it in advance saves you the ticket-purchase step, but it does not give you access to the Priority Fast Lane.
The new Priority service uses a separate physical blue ticket and a dedicated Priority lane. So an ordinary e-ticket and a Priority ticket are two different products.
For the 2026 trial period, the public cable-car website sells the regular ticket, while the blue Priority tickets are distributed through registered travel agencies.
Santoriginal Tours can currently arrange Cable Car Priority Access as an add-on to any of our private Santorini tours. It is not sold by Santoriginal as a standalone cable-car ticket.
No. Some cruise days are much easier than others. If your ship has a long stay, you reach the Old Port during a quieter period, or there are only a few ships arriving around the same time, the regular cable car may still work perfectly well.
Priority Access becomes more useful when your usable time ashore is short or when your tender timing overlaps with a concentrated arrival or return period. We look at your actual cruise schedule before recommending whether the extra cost makes sense.
They solve the same cruise-day problem in different ways. Priority Access keeps you on the normal Old Port–Fira cable-car route but gives you access to the dedicated Priority lane.
A private water taxi bypasses that route altogether and transfers your party by sea from Fira Old Port, normally to Athinios, where your private vehicle and local guide can meet you.
The better option depends on your ship schedule, tender timing, group size and how you want the day to flow. For some guests Priority Access is the simplest solution; for others, especially families or larger private groups, the water taxi may still make more sense.
Yes. The September and October 2026 operation is being used as a test period for the new Priority system, and the service is expected to continue for the 2027 season.
What has not yet been finalized is the 2027 price, exactly how the booking process will work, and whether travelers will also be able to buy Priority Access directly online. We do know that registered travel agencies, including Santoriginal Tours, will continue to have access to the Priority tickets.
