The Greek Christmas Sweets Stories - Part I

Aphrodite Maria Micheli

Unraveling a Greek recipe is always like unveiling a hidden story, and it's no different when it comes to the traditional handmade Christmas cakes and cookies.

🎄You see, in Greece, Christmas is marked by mouthwatering delicacies, like "Melomakarona" (honey cookies) and "Kourabiedes" (sugar cookies).

As far back as you could remember, your Greek mom would incite you to join her in crafting these cookies before Christmas. Your initial instinct was to run outside and join your friends in holiday merriment, but no escaping the task at hand was allowed. Yet, once you began shaping your cookies, everything else simply fell away. Trying to perfect the cylindrical honey cookies and the rounded sugar cookies was indeed a challenge, with only your mom's versions as the gold standard.

🍪 It's finally time for the oven! The intoxicating aroma of the homemade pastry treats starts to fill the air, setting your taste buds abuzz with excitement.

Suddenly the room is infused with the scent of honey, cinnamon, walnuts and almond, a scent that promises of sweet indulgence to come. The anticipation builds up as everyone waits for the first bite, that crucial bite that decides the tone of the Christmas day. It could make it or break it!

If the sweet taste hits the mark, Mom would be content, knowing her Christmas guests would be pleased, and the Christmas feast table starts to comes to life. She would proudly welcome the family on this important day without any hesitation. Because, you see, creating exquisite Melomakarona or Kourambiedes is not an easy task - it's akin to crafting a fine wine.

❄️A delectable dilemma that has become an age-old trivia - Melomakarona or Kourabiedes?

Your aunt will undoubtedly welcome you with these treats, as soon as you take off your coat and dust off the remnants of the winter chill, stepping into the cozy warmth of your cousins' home for the day. A large, enticing platter, half-dressed in snow-white and half-draped in gold, will be ceremoniously placed right in front of your face, accompanied by your aunt's contagious smile and her overbearing, yet charming attitude?

In that fleeting moment, you'll find yourself at the crossroads of a monumental decision. A decision that may seem trivial at first glance but actually, one that you will grapple with repeatedly over the years to come. This seemingly trivial choice has been the stuff of family folklore, a conversation starter, a friendly debate that has sparked intrigue and amusement amongst generations. The question that hangs heavy in the air, much like the sweet aroma of these traditional treats - Will it be the syrupy Melomakarona or the powdered sugar-coated Kourabiedes?
